HUGH F. CULVERHOUSE Jr. (#68):  I went to law school with Hugh F. Culverhouse, Jr., son of the first owner of the Tampa bay Bucs.  Hugh was a nice guy and in preparation for tomorrow’s story, I checked on Hugh to see what he was up to these days.  I found an amazing story that I want to share with you!  While Hugh went to UF Law School with us, his parents had attended the University of Alabama, where the business school is named after his father.

In September of 2018, Hugh donated $26.5 million to the University of Alabama, the largest donation ever made to the University, and the law school was renamed the Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law.  In May 2019, the state of Alabama passed what Hugh called the “horrendous abortion bill”, which he says is more restrictive than Saudi Arabia’s.  Under this law, doctors who perform abortions could be charge with a felony punishable by 99 years in prison.  There is no exception for rape.

Hugh urged a boycott of the University of Alabama, saying, “We’ve got to put pressure on to change the laws.”  The University returned Hugh’s donation, and took his name off the law school.  Hugh’s response, “You probably shouldn’t put a living person’s name on a building, because at some point they might get fed up and start talking.

Way to go Hugh!
